The glide-tilt mechanism is very stiff at first. It lightens up. I am pretty strong and it took a long time to figure out that I had to push down on the sleeve extremely hard the first time. There really is no info out there about exactly how to work that mechanism, and because you can feel what sounds like metal seeming to prevent the sleeve from going down I hesitated for a long time before applying that much pressure. I wiggled and wiggled it, to try to make sure that if there was something that needed to be aligned it might fall into place, and I am not sure that played a part or not, but after repeated sessions of trying suddenly it worked and I have not had trouble since. It is not as hard to push the sleeve down any more. You have to make sure that the sleeve (to which the ribs are attached) that rides up to the top of the pole has been elevated above the joint at which the tilt happens, but that seems obvious to me. Even though they could not tell me exactly how to get the tilt to work, I appreciated that the personnel at PatioLiving were available to try to help and to track down the several shipments (umbrella, then base, then cover). I used the chat to communicate with them which worked better than trying on the phone. Of course this is during the COVID-19 pandemic. I would buy from them again. I think that this is a good product for the price.
