Teak is the common name for Tectona Grandis, a hardwood species of wood found in the tropic locations of South and Southeast Asia. This dense-grained wood is one of the hardest, most durable hardwoods available in the market, and is used in both indoor and outdoor applications. Its natural weather-resistance makes teak outdoor furniture ideal in all locations for year-round use. This outstanding outdoor material contains high level of natural oils and resins that make the material inherently water-repellant and long-lasting. This prevents teak patio from losing its structural integrity when exposed to moisture and humidity, and will withstand even the harshest of weather elements such as rain, snow, and sun. Natural oils found in teak wood also make this material insect-repellant against termites and pests.

The superior quality of teak wood makes teak patio furniture relatively more expensive compared to other outdoor furniture constructed from other materials such as metal, recycled plastic, and other wood types. However, outdoor furniture made from teak can last a lifetime and ages gracefully season after season. As teak ages, the material gains more volume and becomes more dense compared to other wood fibers, which makes teak outdoor furniture unrivaled in terms of durability and strength. Teak outdoor furniture also offers unparalleled aesthetic qualities compared to other outdoor materials, and is classed as a luxurious wood. Teak wood furniture is naturally a golden honey brown. To maintain this warm color, it is highly recommended to regularly treat teak furniture with teak oil to retain its handsome finish. However, others may prefer the unique beauty of untreated teak. When teak furniture is exposed to outdoor elements, it develops an elegant silver grey patina. Make sure to purchase unfinished teak furniture and products at the same time to ensure the same color.

For high-quality teak furniture, look for quality wood craftsmanship that features joints and joinery to ensure its value. The thickness of the lumber used is also an indicator of the quality of the used in outdoor furniture, and should measure at least 1.5 inches on all sides. If hardware is used in the construction of teak patio furniture, make sure that the hardware is made from stainless steel or brass to prevent corrosion which can potentially damage the structural integrity of your teak furniture.
